CEFR A1 · Beginner
German A1 starts with the sounds and the three genders: der, die and das arrive attached to every noun, and the umlauts and the ch of ich and Buch take a few weeks of practice. You learn sein and haben, the present tense with its du -st and er -t endings, numbers with the units spoken before the tens (einundzwanzig), and when Sie is safer than du. By the end you can greet people, introduce yourself, order in a café and tell the time.
