When a noun is the thing you want or take (the object), masculine ein changes to einen. Feminine eine and neuter ein do not change at all. So der Kaffee becomes einen Kaffee, but die Suppe stays eine Suppe and das Bier stays ein Bier.
Examples
- Ich hätte gerne einen Kaffee.
- I'd like a coffee.
- Ich nehme eine Suppe.
- I'll have a soup.
- Ein Bier, bitte.
- A beer, please.
- Für mich einen Tee.
- A tea for me.
The mistake to avoid
Adding -en to everything - only masculine words change; "einen Suppe" is wrong.
