German makes shades by joining hell- (light) or dunkel- (dark) to the front of a colour, written as one word: hellblau, dunkelgrün. After sein colours stay bare like any adjective - das Auto ist rot - and a colour used as a noun is neuter and capitalised: das Blau.
Examples
- Mein Pullover ist dunkelblau.
- My jumper is dark blue.
- Die Wand ist hellgrün.
- The wall is light green.
- Das Auto ist rot.
- The car is red.
The mistake to avoid
Write the shade as one word: hellblau, not "hell blau".
Where this fits in
