To say you like doing something, German adds gern to the verb: ich tanze gern (I like dancing), ich lese nicht gern (I don't like reading). For things and people, use mögen: ich mag Katzen. Lieber means "rather": ich trinke lieber Tee.
Examples
- Ich koche gern.
- I like cooking.
- Magst du Musik?
- Do you like music?
- Ich gehe lieber ins Kino.
- I'd rather go to the cinema.
The mistake to avoid
"Ich mag tanzen" sounds odd - for activities use gern: ich tanze gern.
Where this fits in
Colours, clothes & likes, German A1: Name colours and clothes, buy something in the right size, and say what you like and don't like.
