After sein an adjective is bare (die Wohnung ist klein), but in front of a noun it needs an ending. As the subject, after ein the ending shows the gender: ein kleiner Garten, eine kleine Wohnung, ein kleines Haus; after der, die and das it is -e: der kleine Garten. After einen, einem or dem it becomes -en: einen großen Balkon, mit einem großen Garten.
Examples
- Wir haben eine kleine Wohnung.
- We have a small flat.
- Das ist ein schönes Haus.
- That's a beautiful house.
- Es gibt einen großen Balkon.
- There's a big balcony.
The mistake to avoid
The bare form only works after sein: "eine klein Wohnung" is wrong.
