Polish does NOT shift tenses the way English does. "Jestem zmęczony" reported stays "Powiedział, że jest zmęczony" - the original tense is kept and only the person changes. A yes/no question is introduced by czy, and a command becomes żeby + past-form verb: "Poprosił, żebyśmy przełożyli spotkanie."
Examples
- Powiedział, że jest zmęczony i że zadzwoni później.
- He said that he was tired and that he would call later.
- Zapytała, czy przeczytałem raport.
- She asked whether I had read the report.
- Dyrektor poprosił, żebyśmy przełożyli spotkanie.
- The director asked us to postpone the meeting.
The mistake to avoid
Backshifting the tense out of English habit - "powiedział, że był zmęczony" - means he said he HAD BEEN tired earlier, which is a different claim.
