Polish verbs change their ending for each person, so the ending already tells you who is doing the action and the words for "I" and "you" are normally left out. Most present-tense verbs end in -ę for "I" and -sz for "you". Polish also has no words for "a" or "the" at all.
Examples
- Mówię po polsku.
- I speak Polish.
- Skąd jesteś?
- Where are you from?
- Mam na imię Anna.
- My name is Anna.
- Jestem z Polski.
- I'm from Poland.
The mistake to avoid
Saying "ja mówię" every time — adding "ja" sounds like heavy emphasis ("*I* speak"), so drop it unless you're contrasting.
Where this fits in
Greetings & introductions, Polish A1: Say hello, give your name, ask someone else's, and where they're from.
