Polish has no articles at all - kawa is "coffee", "a coffee" and "the coffee", and context does the rest. Every noun is masculine, feminine or neuter, and you can usually tell from the ending: a consonant is masculine, -a is feminine, -o or -e is neuter.
Examples
- To jest kawa.
- This is a coffee.
- Mam brata i siostrę.
- I have a brother and a sister.
- Okno jest otwarte.
- The window is open.
The mistake to avoid
Do not look for a word for "the" - adding one is the commonest thing English speakers try to do.
Where this fits in
Greetings & introductions, Polish A1: Say hello, give your name, ask someone else's, and where they're from.
