Written argument leans on participles: -ąc marks an action happening at the same time as the main verb, while -wszy marks one finished just before it. Both require the same subject in each half of the sentence; adjectival participles in -ący or -ny let you compress a whole relative clause into one word.
Examples
- Analizując dane, można zauważyć wyraźną tendencję.
- Analysing the data, one can see a clear trend.
- Przeczytawszy artykuł, zmieniłem swoje stanowisko.
- Having read the article, I changed my position.
- Autor, powołując się na badania, odrzuca ten kontrargument.
- The author, citing research, rejects this counterargument.
- Argumenty przedstawione przez przeciwników są nieprzekonujące.
- The arguments put forward by the opponents are unconvincing.
The mistake to avoid
Giving the participle a different subject from the main clause ("Czytając artykuł, zadzwonił telefon") — both actions must belong to the same doer.
