Welsh changes the first letter of a word after certain trigger words. The soft mutation is the commonest: p, t, c become b, d, g; b, d, g become f, dd and nothing; and m, ll, rh become f, l, r. Triggers include i, o, ar, dau, dy and yn before a noun.
Examples
- Dw i'n mynd i Gaerdydd.
- I'm going to Cardiff.
- Hoffwn i baned o de.
- I'd like a cup of tea.
- Mae hi'n dod o Fangor.
- She comes from Bangor.
The mistake to avoid
The dictionary form is the unmutated one - look up caerdydd under C, not G.
