Welsh does not say 'I am' with one word: you use a form of 'bod' plus 'yn' (shortened to ''n' after a vowel) before what you are or do. 'Dw i' = I am, 'rwyt ti' / 'wyt ti' = you are (friendly), 'mae e/hi' = he/she is. To give your name you can also front it: name first, then 'ydw i'.
Examples
- Rhys ydw i.
- I'm Rhys.
- Dw i'n dod o Fangor.
- I come from Bangor.
- Sut wyt ti heddiw?
- How are you today?
- Mae hi'n dod o Gaerdydd.
- She comes from Cardiff.
The mistake to avoid
Learners drop the 'yn'/''n' link — it is 'Dw i'n dod', never 'Dw i dod'.
