A Welsh sentence begins with the verb, then the subject, then everything else - Mae Siân yn byw yn Aberystwyth is literally "is Siân living in Aberystwyth". Almost every everyday sentence starts with a form of bod, so the pattern is worth hearing as one block.
Examples
- Mae Siân yn byw yn Aberystwyth.
- Siân lives in Aberystwyth.
- Dw i'n gweithio yng Nghaerdydd.
- I work in Cardiff.
- Mae'r plant yn chwarae.
- The children are playing.
The mistake to avoid
Starting with the subject, as English does, is the first thing to unlearn - the verb leads.
