Welsh nouns are masculine or feminine, and the gender shows itself in what happens after the word y ("the"): a feminine noun takes a soft mutation, a masculine one does not. So it is y bachgen but y ferch, from merch.
Examples
- Mae'r ferch yn darllen.
- The girl is reading.
- Mae'r bachgen yn canu.
- The boy is singing.
- Mae'r gath yn cysgu.
- The cat is sleeping.
The mistake to avoid
The gender is invisible on the noun itself - you see it in the mutation after y.
