A polite request in Turkish is a question: the aorist plus mi ("Kapıyı kapatır mısınız?") or the ability form plus mi ("Adresi gönderebilir misiniz?"). The bare imperative (gönder!) is for people you are close to.
Examples
- Adresi bana gönderebilir misiniz?
- Could you send me the address?
- Biraz bekler misiniz, lütfen?
- Would you wait a moment, please?
- Rahatsız ediyorum, kusura bakmayın.
- Sorry to disturb you.
The mistake to avoid
The polite plural -siniz does the work of "please" on its own; lütfen is a bonus, not a substitute for the right ending.
Where this fits in
Telefon, mesajlar ve küçük sorunlar, Turkish A2: Aramak ve yazmak, özür dilemek, bir yanlış anlaşılmayı çözmek ve yardım istemek - işler planlandığı gibi gitmediğinde günlük hayat.
