The -iyor tense describes what is happening right now or around now: şu an temizliyorum. The geniş zaman describes what is generally true, a habit or a willingness: her hafta temizlerim. English uses the simple present for both, which is why they get confused.
Examples
- Şu anda bulaşıkları yıkıyorum.
- Right now I am washing the dishes.
- Her cumartesi evi temizlerim.
- Every Saturday I clean the house.
- Çamaşırları akşam asarım.
- I hang the washing out in the evening.
The mistake to avoid
A habit takes the geniş zaman: her gün temizlerim, not "her gün temizliyorum".
