Turkish negates a verb by inserting -me or -ma before the tense ending: gelmiyor, anlamadım. Nouns and adjectives are negated with a separate word, değil: bu doğru değil. The two systems never mix.
Examples
- Mesajını hiç anlamadım.
- I did not understand his message at all.
- Dünden beri çalışmıyor.
- It has not been working since yesterday.
- Bu benim hatam değil.
- This is not my fault.
The mistake to avoid
Değil is only for nouns and adjectives, never for a conjugated verb.
