European Portuguese signals formality through the form of address: tu with second-person verbs for friends, the person's name or title with third-person verbs for polite distance, and o senhor / a senhora at the most formal. Você exists but sounds blunt in Portugal, so name plus third person is the safe neutral.
Examples
- Queres um café?
- Do you want a coffee? (to a friend)
- A Dra. Marta pode dizer-me a que horas começa a reunião?
- Could you tell me what time the meeting starts, Dr. Marta?
- O senhor já foi atendido?
- Have you been served, sir?
The mistake to avoid
Reaching for você with strangers in Portugal - it can sound curt, so use the person's name or title with a third-person verb.
