With the introducing verb in the past (disse, explicou, avisou), the reported verb steps back: presente becomes imperfeito, pretérito perfeito becomes mais-que-perfeito composto, and futuro becomes condicional. A yes/no question takes se, and an order becomes para + infinitivo or que + conjuntivo.
Examples
- Disse que estava cansado e que voltaria a ligar mais tarde.
- He said he was tired and that he would call back later.
- Perguntou-me se eu tinha lido o relatório.
- She asked me whether I had read the report.
- O diretor pediu que adiássemos a reunião.
- The director asked us to postpone the meeting.
The mistake to avoid
In European Portuguese the clitic moves in reported speech: "disse-me" but "não me disse" and "que me disse" - the que that introduces the reported clause pulls the pronoun in front of the verb.
Where this fits in
Relatar e negociar, Portuguese C1: Relatar o que outros disseram com o distanciamento devido, mover-se no registo profissional de reuniões e propostas, e ler a atualidade: números, tendências e fontes.
