Negating a verb changes the case of its object: mam czas becomes nie mam czasu, widzę film becomes nie widzę filmu. The genitive also carries absence (nie ma mleka), quantity words (dużo, mało, kilka, trochę, większość) and every number from five up, and it is the only case allowed after bez, dla, od, do, według, oprócz, podczas and z powodu.
Examples
- Nie mam dzisiaj czasu.
- I do not have time today.
- W lodówce nie ma mleka.
- There is no milk in the fridge.
- Kupiłem dużo owoców i trochę sera.
- I bought a lot of fruit and a bit of cheese.
- Zrobiłem to bez twojej pomocy.
- I did it without your help.
The mistake to avoid
Leaving the object in the accusative after nie ("nie widzę film"). A negated verb takes the genitive: nie widzę filmu, nie znam tej kobiety, nie mam czasu.
Where this fits in
Przeczenie i ilość (dopełniacz), Polish B2: The genitive is the case Polish reaches for when something is negated, counted or missing. This unit drills the switch from accusative to genitive under negation, the quantity words that demand it, and the prepositions that never take anything else.
