To say what you would do, take the past-tense form of the verb and add by plus the person ending: -bym (I), -byś (you), -byśmy (we). For a hypothetical condition, open the clause with gdyby carrying the same ending, and use the conditional in both halves of the sentence.
Examples
- Chciałbym zmienić kilka rzeczy w swoim życiu.
- I'd like to change a few things in my life.
- Gdybym miał więcej czasu, częściej spotykałbym się z rodziną.
- If I had more time, I'd meet up with my family more often.
- Gdybyś mógł zacząć od nowa, co byś zrobił?
- If you could start over, what would you do?
- Bez tego doświadczenia nie byłabym dziś tą osobą.
- Without that experience I wouldn't be the person I am today.
The mistake to avoid
Putting a plain past or present tense after gdyby — Polish requires the conditional in the if-clause too (gdybym miał, never "gdyby mam").
Where this fits in
Refleksje nad życiem, Polish B2: Reflect on life, values, personal growth, and relationships.
