Italian verbs ending in -si (svegliarsi, alzarsi, vestirsi) need a reflexive pronoun that matches the subject: mi, ti, si, ci, vi, si. Drop the -si, conjugate the verb normally, and put the pronoun in front of it: io mi sveglio, tu ti svegli, lui/lei si sveglia. After an infinitive the pronoun instead attaches to the end and matches the subject: devo alzarmi presto.
Examples
- Mi sveglio alle sette e mi alzo subito.
- I wake up at seven and I get up right away.
- Mia sorella si trucca tutti i giorni.
- My sister puts on makeup every day.
- Ci laviamo i denti dopo i pasti.
- We brush our teeth after meals.
- Ho bisogno di riposarmi un po'.
- I need to rest a little.
The mistake to avoid
Leaving out the pronoun — "Sveglio alle sette" means you wake someone else up, not yourself; you need "Mi sveglio alle sette."
