Italian picks the preposition by the place, and the pairings have to be learned. Use a with cities and with lezione, casa, scuola, letto. Use in with countries, regions and most enclosed places: in ufficio, in centro, in banca. Al and dal are a and da merged with il.

The mistake to avoid
A casa and in casa both exist, but a casa is the one you want for going home.
