Verbs that take essere in the passato prossimo (andare, venire, partire, arrivare, restare, uscire, entrare, tornare, nascere, morire, and all reflexives) agree with the subject like an adjective: -o, -a, -i, -e. Verbs with avere keep the participle unchanged.

- She went to the market.
- Siamo partiti presto.
- We left early.
- Le mie sorelle sono tornate tardi.
- My sisters got back late.
The mistake to avoid
With avere the ending never moves: "lei ha mangiato", not "lei ha mangiata".
