Adding the reflexive pronoun to certain verbs shifts the meaning instead of just pointing the action back at you. Dormire is to sleep; addormentarsi is to fall asleep. Riposare is to rest; riposarsi is to take a rest. Alzare is to lift something; alzarsi is to get up.
Examples
- Dormo sette ore, ma mi addormento tardi.
- I sleep seven hours, but I fall asleep late.
- Mi riposo un'ora dopo cena.
- I rest for an hour after dinner.
- Si alza sempre prima di me.
- He always gets up before me.
The mistake to avoid
Addormentarsi is a moment, not a stretch of time, so it cannot take a duration.
