These three carry ability, obligation and wanting, and each is followed by a bare infinitive with nothing in between. Potere is can, dovere is must or have to, volere is want to. Only the modal changes for the person; the second verb stays in the infinitive.
Examples
- Puoi richiamarmi più tardi?
- Can you call me back later?
- Devo mandare un messaggio adesso.
- I have to send a message now.
- Voglio rispondere alla sua email.
- I want to reply to their email.
The mistake to avoid
No preposition joins them - say "devo mandare", never "devo di mandare".
