Italian builds its other negatives on the same frame as non. Non... niente is nothing, non... nessuno is nobody, non... più is not any more, non... ancora is not yet. The non stays in place before the verb whenever the second word follows it.

- Non funziona più da ieri.
- It has not been working since yesterday.
- Non ho capito niente del suo messaggio.
- I did not understand anything in his message.
- Non c'è nessuno al servizio clienti.
- There is nobody at customer service.
The mistake to avoid
If the negative word comes first, the non disappears: nessuno risponde, not "nessuno non risponde".
