These small adverbs do not go at the end of the sentence. They slot between the auxiliary and the participle: sei mai stato, ho già mangiato, non ho ancora finito. To ask whether someone has ever done something use mai in the question, and non plus mai to answer never.
Examples
- Sei mai stato in Sicilia?
- Have you ever been to Sicily?
- Non ho mai assaggiato questo piatto.
- I have never tasted this dish.
- Ho già visto quel film.
- I have already seen that film.
The mistake to avoid
Negative sentences keep both words: non ho mai, never just "ho mai".
