The αόριστος reports one finished action: πήγα, είδα, έφαγα. The παρατατικός describes what was going on, or what used to happen: πήγαινα, έβλεπα, έτρωγα. A story usually sets the scene with the second and moves forward with the first.
Examples
- Κάθε καλοκαίρι πηγαίναμε στο νησί.
- Every summer we used to go to the island.
- Πέρσι πήγαμε στην Κρήτη.
- Last year we went to Crete.
- Ενώ περπατούσα, συνάντησα έναν φίλο.
- While I was walking, I met a friend.
The mistake to avoid
A named single occasion takes the αόριστος: πέρσι πήγαμε, not "πέρσι πηγαίναμε".
