Greek softens a request with a diminutive far more than English does: ένα λεπτάκι ("just a minute"), έναν καφεδάκι, μια ερωτησούλα. The -άκι / -ούλα ending does not really mean "small" - it means "do not take this as a demand".

- Έχετε ένα λεπτάκι να σας ρωτήσω κάτι;
- Do you have a minute for me to ask you something?
- Θα ήθελα μια μικρή διευκρίνιση.
- I'd like a small clarification.
- Μια ερωτησούλα μόνο και τελειώνω.
- Just a quick question and I'm done.
The mistake to avoid
Diminutives belong to speech and friendly email; in a formal letter they read as too casual, so keep them out of official writing.
