Y replaces a phrase starting with à, including places: j'y vais. En replaces one starting with de, and also a quantity: j'en ai deux. Both sit directly before the verb, and both are almost never left out the way English drops them.
Examples
- Ne t'inquiète pas, je m'en occupe.
- Do not worry, I will take care of it.
- Le magasin ? J'y vais cet après-midi.
- The shop? I am going there this afternoon.
- Des solutions, il y en a plusieurs.
- There are several solutions.
The mistake to avoid
S'occuper takes de, so it becomes s'en occuper, never "s'y occuper".
Where this fits in
Téléphone, messages et petits problèmes, French A2: Appeler et écrire, s'excuser, dissiper un malentendu et demander de l'aide : le quotidien quand quelque chose ne se passe pas comme prévu.
