Reflexive verbs (se laver, se lever) describe an action you do to yourself, and they need an extra pronoun that matches the subject and sits right before the conjugated verb: je me, tu te, il/elle se, nous nous, vous vous, ils/elles se. The verb itself conjugates normally; only me, te and se shorten to m', t', s' before a vowel or a mute h. In the negative, ne goes before the pronoun and pas after the verb: je ne me lève pas.
Examples
- Je me réveille à sept heures.
- I wake up at seven o'clock.
- Nous nous couchons vers minuit.
- We go to bed around midnight.
- Elle s'habille rapidement avant de sortir.
- She gets dressed quickly before going out.
- Le week-end, je ne me lève pas tôt.
- On the weekend, I don't get up early.
The mistake to avoid
Learners drop the pronoun or leave it as "se" for every subject — "je se lève" or "je lève" instead of "je me lève"; the pronoun must change with the subject.
