To talk about a completed past action, use a present-tense form of avoir or être plus the past participle (parler → parlé, finir → fini, vendre → vendu). Most verbs take avoir, but a small set of movement and change-of-state verbs (aller, venir, partir, arriver, entrer, sortir, monter, descendre, rester, naître, mourir, tomber, devenir) plus all reflexive verbs take être — and with être the participle agrees with the subject in gender and number.
Examples
- Hier soir, j'ai mangé une pizza avec mes amis.
- Last night I ate a pizza with my friends.
- Le week-end dernier, nous avons visité le musée.
- Last weekend we visited the museum.
- Elle est allée au marché samedi matin.
- She went to the market on Saturday morning.
- Est-ce que tu es déjà monté sur la tour Eiffel ?
- Have you ever been up the Eiffel Tower?
The mistake to avoid
Learners default to avoir for every verb and say "j'ai allé" or drop the agreement in "elle est allé" — être verbs need être and a participle that matches the subject (elle est allée).
Where this fits in
Parler du passé, French A2: Raconter ce qu'on a fait hier, le week-end dernier, et ses expériences de vie avec le passé composé.
