The handful of verbs that take être in the passé composé (aller, venir, partir, arriver, rester, monter, descendre, entrer, sortir, tomber, naître, mourir, and reflexives) make their past participle agree with the subject, exactly like an adjective. Add -e if the subject is feminine, -s if plural, -es if both.
Examples
- Elle est allée au marché.
- She went to the market.
- Nous sommes partis très tôt.
- We left very early.
- Mes soeurs sont rentrées tard.
- My sisters got home late.
The mistake to avoid
Verbs with avoir do NOT agree with the subject - "elle a mangé", never "elle a mangée".
