When the introducing verb is in the past (a dit, a expliqué, a averti), the reported verb moves back: présent becomes imparfait, passé composé becomes plus-que-parfait, and futur becomes conditionnel. A yes/no question is introduced by si, an information question keeps its question word, and an order becomes de + infinitif.

The mistake to avoid
Time markers shift too: hier becomes la veille, demain becomes le lendemain, and maintenant becomes alors. Leaving them alone is the giveaway of a translated sentence.
