Written and formal French negates with two parts, ne … pas. In relaxed spoken French the ne is routinely dropped and only pas carries the negation — a register marker, not an error. Keep ne in anything written or formal.
Examples
- Je ne sais pas ce qu'il veut.
- I don't know what he wants. (formal/written)
- J'sais pas, moi !
- I dunno! (casual speech)
- On y va pas ce soir, finalement.
- We're not going tonight after all. (casual)
The mistake to avoid
Dropping ne in an essay or a professional email reads as sloppy, not idiomatic.
