French verbs change ending depending on who does the action. The verb être (to be) is irregular and you must memorize it: je suis, tu es, il/elle est, nous sommes, vous êtes, ils/elles sont. Use it to say who you are and where you are from.
Examples
- Je suis Marie.
- I am Marie.
- Tu es français ?
- Are you French?
- Nous sommes de Paris.
- We are from Paris.
The mistake to avoid
Never drop the subject pronoun — French cannot say just "suis Marie"; the je is obligatory.
