Most verbs form the past with avoir, but a small group of movement verbs - aller, venir, partir, rentrer, rester, revenir - takes être instead, and so does every pronominal verb. With être the participle agrees with the subject: add an e if the subject is feminine, an s if plural.
Examples
- Je suis rentré tard dimanche soir.
- I got home late on Sunday evening.
- Elle est revenue de Lyon hier.
- She came back from Lyon yesterday.
- Nous nous sommes bien amusés.
- We had a really good time.
The mistake to avoid
Verbs with avoir do not agree: j'ai visité, whether you are a man or a woman.
Where this fits in
Parler du passé, French A2: Raconter ce qu'on a fait hier, le week-end dernier, et ses expériences de vie avec le passé composé.
