Short adverbs like déjà, jamais, souvent, beaucoup and bien do not go at the end of a past sentence. They slot between the auxiliary and the participle. To ask whether someone has ever done something, use déjà; to answer never, use ne... jamais around the auxiliary.
Examples
- Tu es déjà allé en Italie ?
- Have you ever been to Italy?
- Je n'ai jamais goûté ce plat.
- I have never tasted this dish.
- Nous avons beaucoup voyagé cette année.
- We travelled a lot this year.
The mistake to avoid
Déjà comes before the participle: tu as déjà mangé, not "tu as mangé déjà".
Where this fits in
