In everyday spoken Finnish the written 'we' form (menemme, puhumme) is almost always replaced by the pronoun 'me' plus the passive form: me mennään, me puhutaan. Without 'me' the same form works as an invitation, 'let's...'.
Examples
- Me mennään nyt kotiin.
- We're going home now. (spoken)
- Menemme nyt kotiin.
- We are going home now. (written/formal)
- Mennään kahville!
- Let's go for coffee!
- Me ei puhuta siitä enää.
- We don't talk about that anymore. (spoken)
The mistake to avoid
Carrying 'me mennään' into asiatyyli - formal writing requires the proper plural form, menemme.
