Finnish verbs change their ending for each person, so 'olla' (to be) becomes olen (I am), olet (you are), on (he/she/it is). Because the ending already tells you who, the pronoun minä/sinä can be left out. Finnish has no words for 'a' or 'the' at all.
Examples
- Minä olen Anna.
- I am Anna.
- Olen opiskelija.
- I am a student.
- Sinä olet Paul, eikö niin?
- You are Paul, aren't you?
- Hän on kotoisin Ruotsista.
- He/she is from Sweden.
The mistake to avoid
Don't add a word for 'a' or 'the' - 'olen opiskelija' already means 'I am a student'.
