"From" is an ENDING, not a word: Suomi becomes Suomesta, Espanja becomes Espanjasta. The choice between -sta and -stä follows vowel harmony. Country and language names are written in lower case when they are the language: suomi, englanti.
Examples
- Olen Espanjasta.
- I'm from Spain.
- Hän on Saksasta.
- She's from Germany.
- Puhun vähän suomea.
- I speak a little Finnish.
The mistake to avoid
Finnish stacks endings rather than using prepositions - there is no separate word for "from".
Where this fits in
Greetings & introductions, Finnish A1: Say hello, give your name, ask someone else's, and where they're from.
