Finnish has no words for "a" or "the" and no grammatical gender at all - hän covers both "he" and "she". What English does with articles, Finnish does with word order and with case endings, so kirja can be "a book" or "the book" depending on the sentence.
Examples
- Tämä on kirja.
- This is a book.
- Hän on opettaja.
- He is a teacher.
- Kirja on pöydällä.
- The book is on the table.
The mistake to avoid
Hän never tells you the person's gender - only the context does.
Where this fits in
Greetings & introductions, Finnish A1: Say hello, give your name, ask someone else's, and where they're from.
