Welsh changes the first letter of a word after certain triggers. The soft mutation turns c into g, p into b, t into d, g into nothing, b into f, d into dd, m into f. It follows yn before an adjective, a feminine noun after y, and the words dy, ei and i.
Examples
- Dw i'n glanhau'r gegin bob dydd Sadwrn.
- I clean the kitchen every Saturday.
- Mae'r tŷ yn lân nawr.
- The house is clean now.
- Dw i'n mynd i olchi'r llestri.
- I am going to wash the dishes.
The mistake to avoid
Cegin is feminine, so y cegin becomes y gegin - the noun's gender causes it.
