The commonest Welsh verbs have their own past forms rather than following a pattern. Mynd gives es i, dod gives ddes i, gwneud gives gwnes i, cael gives ces i, bod gives bues i or ro'n i. These are learned as whole words.
Examples
- Es i i Fangor y llynedd.
- I went to Bangor last year.
- Ces i amser da yno.
- I had a good time there.
- Ro'n i'n arfer mynd bob haf.
- I used to go every summer.
The mistake to avoid
Ro'n i describes what was going on; es i reports one finished journey.
