Welsh wraps the possessed thing in two words: a possessive before it and an echoing pronoun after — 'fy ngwaith i' (my work), 'dy swydd di' (your job), 'ei gartref e' (his home). Each possessive changes the noun's first letter differently: 'fy' nasalises (g becomes ng, t becomes nh), 'dy' and 'ei' (his) soften, and 'ei' (her) breathes.
Examples
- Dw i'n hoffi fy ngwaith i achos mae'n ddiddorol.
- I like my job because it's interesting.
- Beth ydy dy swydd di?
- What's your job?
- Mae ei chartref hi yn agos i'r brifysgol.
- Her home is near the university.
The mistake to avoid
Dropping the echo pronoun — 'fy ngwaith' alone is understandable but sounds incomplete in speech; say 'fy ngwaith i'.
