To say you have something done, or make someone do it, add -dir/-dır/-dur/-dür to the verb stem, -t after a vowel or after l and r, and -ir/-ır to a handful of one-syllable stems (iç-ir-mek, doğ-ur-mak). The person who actually does the work takes the dative -e/-a, and the tense endings follow as usual.
Examples
- Sunumu asistanıma hazırlattım.
- I had my assistant prepare the presentation.
- Patron bize fazla mesai yaptırdı.
- The boss made us work overtime.
- Yolculuktan önce arabamı tamir ettirdim.
- I had my car repaired before the trip.
The mistake to avoid
A few everyday verbs are irregular: gelmek becomes getirmek (to bring), gitmek becomes götürmek (to take away), and görmek becomes göstermek (to show).
Where this fits in
İş hayatı ve kariyer, Turkish B2: Talk about workplace responsibilities, job interviews and career plans; have things done with the causative.
