Turkish has no separate verb for "am/is/are". You attach a small ending straight onto the word: -im/-ım/-um/-üm for "I", -sin/-sın/-sun/-sün for "you", and nothing at all for he/she/it. The vowel of the ending copies the last vowel of the word.
Examples
- Ben öğrenciyim.
- I am a student.
- Sen Türk müsün?
- Are you Turkish?
- O doktor.
- He/She is a doctor.
- Biz İstanbulluyuz.
- We are from Istanbul.
The mistake to avoid
Learners add an ending for he/she/it, but "O doktor" is complete as it stands.
