Use som to hang a describing clause on a noun; it covers both 'who' and 'which/that'. Normal word order follows it, and som may be left out when it is the object of its clause but never when it is the subject.
Examples
- Mannen som bor här heter Erik.
- The man who lives here is called Erik.
- Bussen som går till centrum är försenad.
- The bus that goes to the centre is delayed.
- Artikeln (som) jag läste igår handlade om klimatet.
- The article (that) I read yesterday was about the climate.
- Det är en fråga som inte diskuteras tillräckligt.
- That's an issue that isn't discussed enough.
The mistake to avoid
Dropping som when it is the subject (*Mannen bor här heter Erik) - only object som may disappear.
