Use har + supine (perfekt) for a past event that still matters now, and hade + supine (pluskvamperfekt) for something that happened before another past event. The supine is a fixed third form of the verb: bo - bodde - bott, gå - gick - gått, äta - åt - ätit.
Examples
- Jag har bott i Sverige i tio år.
- I've lived in Sweden for ten years.
- Hon hade redan gått när jag kom.
- She had already left when I arrived.
- Mina värderingar har förändrats mycket sedan dess.
- My values have changed a lot since then.
- Vi insåg att vi hade växt ifrån varandra.
- We realised we had grown apart.
The mistake to avoid
Using the preteritum form after har (*har gick) - the supine (gått) is a separate form and never stands alone.
