Formal Swedish links parallel points with paired conjunctions: både … och (both … and), varken … eller (neither … nor), antingen … eller (either … or), and in argument dels … dels (partly … partly) and såväl … som (as well as). The two halves must frame phrases of the same kind - two nouns, two infinitives, two clauses.
Examples
- Både industrin och hushållen måste minska sina utsläpp.
- Both industry and households have to cut their emissions.
- Förslaget är varken realistiskt eller rättvist.
- The proposal is neither realistic nor fair.
- Vi måste dels bygga ut vindkraften, dels spara energi.
- We have to partly expand wind power, partly save energy.
- Kritiken kom från såväl forskare som politiker.
- The criticism came from researchers as well as politicians.
The mistake to avoid
varken … eller already carries the negation, so there is no inte: det är varken billigt eller snabbt, never *det är inte varken billigt eller snabbt. And keep the halves parallel: både att bygga och att spara, not *både bygga och att spara.
Where this fits in
Miljö, klimat och framtid, Swedish B2: Discuss climate and energy, sustainable consumption, and how cities should be planned - with the paired conjunctions formal argument runs on.
